Chapter Six
Rick walked into his apartment, exhausted from a long day of working out with his clients, but excited for the night to come. He dropped his keys on the kitchen counter and opened the refrigerator. Grabbing a bottle of water, he tossed the cap in the trash and guzzled it down in less than a minute. The California heat was one thing. He was used to some pretty hot summers in Kansas. It was the humidity that was killing him. He’d been sweating like a stuck pig ever since he arrived. Had it not been for air-conditioning in the gym, his Honda, or his condo, he might completely melt.
His phone rang and startled him. He threw the empty bottle in the trash and picked up the phone.
“Hello.”
“Ricky? My heavens, I have been calling you all day. I didn’t know if you were hurt, or murdered, or what was going on!”
Rick looked up at the ceiling and closed his eyes in frustration. His mother, God love her, had always been a worrywart. When he announced he was moving to California, she took that mentality to new heights.
“Oh for crying out loud, Mom. I’m fine. Just like I was yesterday and the day before that and the day before that.”
“Don’t you give me that tone, young man! I am your mother. Can I help it if I worry about you? You’re my baby boy, you know.”
“Mom, I’m your only boy.”
“Exactly. It’s not like I have a spare lying around. You’re one of a kind, and I love you very much. If anything ever happened to you I’d…well, I don’t even want to think about it.”
“Mom, I know. I wish you would try and relax. There’s crime in Kansas, too. It’s not like all the bad guys in the world hang out in Southern California. Hell, our small town even produced a gay man. Remember how scandalous that was?”
“Rick Tanner, I will tan your hide if you give me anymore back talk. I am allowed to worry about my boy. Now, how are you doing? Are you eating okay? Getting plenty of rest?”
He let out a calming breath and did his best to rein in his annoyance. He loved his mother. She was a good lady, and he knew she had nothing but the best of intentions, but sometimes, hell, all the time, she got on his last nerve. She acted like he was still a child who didn’t know how to tie his shoes.
“Mom, I’m doing fine. I’m eating right and resting. I promise you. I wish you would remember that health and fitness is kind of my job. I do know how to take care of myself.”
He walked around the kitchen counter and sat in one of the breakfast-nook stools. His answering machine was flashing the number nine at him, indicating his message count, or at least the number of times his mom had tried to call.
“Mom, did you leave me a bunch of messages?”
“Oh, I might have left a few.
